Camping near L’Ile Rousse

L’Ile Rousse (L’Isula in Corsican) is a true Corsican gem located in Upper Corsica, within the stunning Balagne region. Its inhabitants are known as Isulani or Île-Roussiens.

This Mediterranean coastal town covers 2.5 $km^2$ and has a population of just over 3,000. Renowned for its seafront bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, it is one of Corsica’s premier tourist destinations, boasting picturesque streets and a magnificent white sandy beach with crystal-clear waters.

The town is steeped in history; you can discover historical treasures such as the paintings of St. Jerome and The Temptation of Christ at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, inaugurated in 1893 on Place Paoli. You can also admire authentic houses featuring Florentine-style interior staircases and charming artisanal boutiques selling Corsican olive oil and charcuterie. Be sure to stop by the covered market to taste local delicacies and chat with producers, or stroll through the town centre’s narrow streets for a spot of shopping.

Don’t forget to bring home the symbolic Corsican seashell, the "Eye of Saint Lucy"—unless you are lucky enough to find one yourself in the sand. Heading towards the sea, you will spot the Scalo Tower, located near the town hall by the port, as well as the railway station. From here, you can take the train to tour Corsica or simply head over to Calvi. For a breath of fresh air, wander along the Marinella promenade, where you can enjoy a drink or a meal with your feet in the sand.

If you head towards the harbour, you will see a bronze mermaid statue cast in wax perched on a rock. Continue past the fishing boats and yachts to climb up to the Genoese tower and the Pietra Island lighthouse to admire panoramic views of L’Ile Rousse. A small tourist train runs from the town centre if you prefer to go directly there.

There are plenty of water sports to enjoy on-site: towable tubes, water skiing, wakeboarding, flyboarding, seabobbing, pedalos, and jet skis. You can also hire a boat, with or without a license.

Finally, you can follow a trail through the maquis (shrubland) to swim at two other heavenly beaches: Bodri and Ghjunchitu.
